Chapter Twenty-Five

Shylie appeared completely unwilling to leave Alainn’s side and was obviously as affected by the troublesome and disturbing dream as Alainn. When Alainn stepped behind the partition to wash and dress for the day, the spirit accompanied her even there.

“Shylie, I would suggest ’tis somewhat intrusive for you to be here within my chambers when I must tend to matters of a private nature,” Alainn stated.

The young spirit didn’t appear to hear Alainn’s voice. She sat down upon the settee and looked away apparently entirely absorbed in contemplative thought. She did not reply therefore, Alainn simply tended to washing and it was then she noticed Shylie was carefully observing her womanly tasks. Alainn’s cheeks flushed slightly for she had always possessed a deeply modest nature.

“Are they as troublesome as it is sometimes said, the monthlies?” Shylie questioned, clearly curious. “My wee mama and my sister Siobhan did not bemoan them for they always said it was part of being a woman and that we should be well pleased of the great honor. But I recall there were many others, both friends and servant girls who found them most bothersome, nearly deplorable.”

Alainn continued on with the task at hand, fitting the absorbent rags, tying them and securing them in place to the thin belt around her waist.

“I suppose it can be an encumbrance at times, but it is simply commonplace, as natural as passing water, and aye, ’tis true, ’tis part of being a woman. You did not reach an age to begin your monthlies then?” Alainn asked the spirit-girl.

She shook her head, “Nay, although I was three and ten when I met my end, I was small of stature, and slight of form. I had not matured yet.” She looked down at her breasts which were small, but surely on the cusp of blossoming. “I was most eagerly anticipating becoming a woman. I always envied Siobhan. She was five years my elder and I wanted to be just like her. She had a commendable womanly shape.” With that the spirit-girl stared openly at Alainn’s uncovered breasts for she had yet to don her chemise.

“It saddens me, Shylie, that you missed much in life. I shall one day see you avenged.”

The spirit-girl sighed deeply and then smiled at Alainn. “It does seem most peculiar that you are my niece, you a lovely blossomed woman and me fated to remain a girl for all eternity.” Shylie admitted.

Alainn pulled her chemise over her head and donned her gown as she changed the topic. “What is it about last night’s dream that frightened you so severely?” Alainn questioned.

“It was most disagreeable and unnerving.”

“Aye, it was to be sure, but was the previous time we looked upon the coven not equally disturbing? The demon was mating with the witches then and he remained in horrific demon form.”

“Aye, but at that time your spell of thirteen had ensured there were far fewer witches.”

“My spell of thirteen?” Alainn certainly clearly remembered uttering that powerful spell yet seemed uncertain of what Shylie was indicating.
